Hermann Josef Hack after the opening of documenta X on June, 21st,
1997:
We'll see the benefit of this documenta later. In order to give the
visitors enough time to make their own opinion, we will put the Virtual
Roof in the web before the beginning of August. We are proud to cooperate
with the street magazine "Der tagesSATZ", sold by homeless people in Kassel.
We hope that this project will help to focus that equal access as to modern
art as to new media must be given to all members of society"
The virtual roof over Kassel poses the crucial question regarding the 10th documenta exhibition:
What are the future prospects for art?
Already during the preparations for the 10th documenta in Kassel, Hermann Josef Hack, the 40-year-old media artist, notes: "Since the beginnings of the documenta, little has changed in the history of art, and the impact of art on society is hardly noticeable. Except for the sales of works of art, which are expected to blossom at higher prices owing to the documenta, and apart from the loyal "fans" who regularly visit the exhibition, this spectacle - which is purely oriented to Western culture - hardly presents an overview of the contemporary art scene.
Even though the organizers of documenta act as though they are operating an interactive forum on the Internet, it is obvious to the layman that the organizers still cling to traditional forms of art and are not interested in providing an opening for new art forms, that is, new media. Now what, in the eyes of the world, is the future for art today? As a result of the opportunities for global networking, new forums of discussion are emerging, which can bring fresh thoughts to the study of this issue. This process of democratization also affects issues relating to art. I shall, therefore, give the members of the global village community an opportunity to express their thoughts on this issue."
Hack, who already participated in the first interactive TV project - "Van Gogh TV - piazza virtuale" for the documenta IX exhibition, thus anticipating the activities of the modern multimedia world, provides a special platform for all those who wish to participate in the documenta on a virtual basis. He is organizing a virtual roof over Kassel. 600 metres above the Fridericianum and the other sites for the presentation of art, all interested individuals may chose and appropriate a circular piece of sky in return for describing their vision of the future prospects for art. In this way, new neighbourly contacts will be forged between people from all parts of the world, who can meet to get to know one another through an on-line chat and exchange views. All those who are excluded from participation in the official documenta may present themselves at this forum.
In order to help those who receive neither attention nor material assistance from traditional art and artists, each plot will be sold for DM 20 to the benefit of the homeless.
Your visions, the ideas of the members of the global village, as to the future prospects of art will demonstrate whether the organizers of documenta are right in adopting their present attitude - or whether they will have to reconsider their concept for the future. So let us know your opinion: What are the future prospects for art? You may leave your vision when you fill in your claim document of the Virtual Roof Kassel. Remember: The best way to predict the future is to invent it. CU in the Virtual Roof Kassel.
